Counterfeit Legitimacy

"Then he went after the man of God and found him sitting under an oak tree. He said to him, 'Are you the man of God who came from Judah?'

"'I am,' he said.

"'Come home with me,' he said to him, 'and eat bread!'

"But he said: 'I cannot return with you nor go with you, nor will I eat bread or drink water with you in this place. For it was said to me by the word of Adonai: You shall eat no bread nor drink water there, nor should you return back by the way by which you came.'

"So he said to him: 'I also am a prophet like you. An angel spoke to me with the word of Adonai saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’' (He lied to him.) So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water." I Kings 14:14-19 TLV

The man of God who lost his life

The man of God had come from Judah to Israel on assignment from God. Right after he had dinner with the old prophet, he was killed by a lion. Why? Because he had believed a legitimacy lie, acted on that lie, and, in doing so, had disobeyed God. The legitimacy lie the man of God believed was the statement, "I also am a prophet like you." To hear these words from an older prophet, especially an older prophet in the local ministerial association, was music to his ears! "Finally, some spiritual leader recognizes me for who I really am! A prophet! Yes, I'd love to accept his invitation to dinner. This is going to feel so good!"

We believe these lies when we are looking at life though virtual reality goggles of illegitimacy, unable to find true legitimacy. Here are a few more of these lies:

  • I am legitimate when people praise and acknowledge me.

  • I am legitimate when I can solve your problems.

  • I am legitimate when God uses me for powerful things.

  • I am legitimate when I have friends who love me and support me.

  • I am legitimate when I know things or do things that you don't know or can't do.

  • I am legitimate when I have more stuff or have a better life than you have.

  • I am legitimate when God speaks to me more than He speaks to you.

  • I am legitimate when I am a leader and others look to me for their legitimacy. Learn more
